testing times for the New Normal

The topic of conversation on most people’s lips at the moment seems to be the “new normal” and how we proceed as restrictions are eased following lock down.

During the last few weeks many buildings have been completely closed and some still remain so, but what needs to be considered as we gradually start to return to the workplace? How do we welcome our employees and customers back and develop ongoing safe practices?

Practical considerations

Water is considered to be one of the most common risks and applies to all buildings, if the water has been allowed to become stagnant in the pipes and system. Elevated levels of bacteria, lead or copper are associated with prolonged inactivity and stagnant water. It is strongly advised to keep water moving through the building by flushing toilets and urinals at least 3 to 6 times to release bacteria and microbial agents in stagnant water before general use.

Sprinkler systems and alarms

These require continued ongoing maintenance in order to comply with insurance requirements, even if the building is empty. It is important to continue to test all fire safety equipment, even if the building, or parts of the building, remain out of use.

Premises to be safe, clean and operational

While there are no statutory requirements for private buildings, we are starting to see more intensive cleaning becoming the norm as we gravitate towards disinfecting cleaning as the standard, as opposed to just cleaning. This requires the use of more specialist cleaning products and continued importance of colour coded cleaning systems, to ensure this is done effectively. Subtle differences but essential, as we wake up to the benefits of working from a clean and sanitised environment. While the economy needs time to recover,  setting new budgets for cleaning must be a priority.

Grounds maintenance

Outside areas may, very likely, have been neglected during this period. It may be necessary to tidy up outside areas that now require cleaning, painting and cutting back.

How we can help

We work hard to provide our own customers with a range of professional, efficient and reliable services. While an empty building obviously provides an ideal opportunity for maintenance and cleaning to be carried out more easily, it is not essential. The main priority is that both customers and staff feel relaxed knowing they are in a clean, safe environment.
